BMW engineers have designed the OEM oil cooler for the M3/M4 with efficient use of space. Suspending the oil cooler at a right angle to the rest of the cooling system utilizes aerodynamics to cool the oil while exposing the lightweight tube/fin radiator to the hazards of road traffic.

Mishimoto has beefed up the overall oil cooling system design for the F80/82 with a performance oil cooler. The lightweight design was abandoned in favor of an all-aluminum cooler with TIG-welded rods and plates for added strength and cooling. The bars and plates are a much sturdier form of heat exchanger core construction meant for improved heat transfer and have the strength to repel potential road debris to keep oil temperatures down. The thickness of the mesh has been increased by 10mm, representing a 46% increase in core volume, and the oil capacity has been increased by 0,42 liters.
In addition, the system is further protected by improving the lines. From the factory, these vehicles are equipped with unyielding piping that is susceptible to abrasion and corrosion damage. The Mishimoto oil cooler kit features application-specific, flexible and durable nylon braided lines for safer oil circulation. Also included are specially designed adapters that allow AN connections from the OEM BMW S55 oil pump and a secure connection to the oil cooler. The Mishimoto 2015-2020 BMW M3/M4 oil cooler kit fits directly in place of the stock oil cooler.
